How It Works

The QE-02 works on the principle of selective photothermolysis, first described by Anderson and Parrish in 1983. The idea is that a pulse of light matched to a target's absorption, and shorter than the target's thermal relaxation time, deposits energy into that target before heat spreads to surrounding tissue. This is what allows pigment to be destroyed while the skin around it is largely spared.

Because tattoo ink and melanin clusters are very small, they cool in nanoseconds. To act on them selectively, the laser must fire in nanosecond-scale pulses. Electro-optic (EO) Q-switching is used to compress the laser output into these ultra-short, high peak-energy bursts. When the pulse is absorbed by a pigment particle, the rapid energy deposition produces a photoacoustic effect that shatters the particle into tiny fragments. Some fragments are expelled from the skin surface, and the rest are small enough to be engulfed by phagocytes and cleared through the lymphatic system over the following weeks.

Wavelength choice drives depth and target. The longer wavelength penetrates deeper and is well suited to dark, deep pigment and darker skin types, while the shorter wavelength is absorbed more strongly by superficial pigment such as freckles and lentigines.
